Appeal launched after steps of historic bridge are damaged

A police appeal has been launched after Crowland’s historic Trinity Bridge was damaged.

The Voice understands that some of the steps on the Grade One listed monument have been chipped away at.

The bridge dates back to the 14th century and once spanned the River Welland and one of its tributaries.

South Holland Police said in a statement: “We are appealing for information after an incident of criminal damage on East Street in Crowland.

On the morning of Monday March 27, damage was discovered to the South Street end of the Holy Trinity Bridge.

“It is suspected that the damage occurred the previous day, Sunday, 26 March, between 3pm and 7pm.

“Officers want to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time, occupants of addresses nearby with CCTV, as well as owners of vehicles fitted with dash cameras.

“The bridge is Grade 1 Listed and a protected monument under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.”

A representative from Crowland Parish Council said they were “extremely disappointed that this grade one listed bridge built in the 14th century has become subjected to criminal damage.”
