Pinchbeck United made to pay for poor second half as Thorogood bemoans Spafford injury

Pinchbeck United 1 Newark & Sherwood 4

Lewis Thorogood admitted that his Pinchbeck United side paid the price for their “worst 45 minutes of the season” on Saturday as they were thrashed 4-1 by Newark and Sherwood United on Saturday.

All looked to be going to plan for the Knights as Neal Spafford, playing in a midfield role instead of his usual defensive one, put them ahead from an Andre Williams cross on 13 minutes.

Spafford then teed up Elliot Foster for what looked like a second goal, only for it to be controversially ruled out for offside.

A knee injury then saw Spafford taken forced off and that turned the game, with Newark and Sherwood running riot after the break.

Nyle Blake’s rapid treble (46, 57 and 71) gave the visitors the initiative, before Kieran Cummings (75) put the result beyond doubt.

For boss Thorogood, it was a bad day at the office for his side.

“For the first time this season we had a really bad half,” conceded the Knights chief. “And we got what we deserved, to be honest.

“Things went well in the first half and we should really have been 2-0 up.

“Spaff was doing really well in midfield, so when he went off it rocked us a bit.

“We made it to half time and had a chance to reorganise things, but I have to give credit to Newark and Sherwood – they made changes and scored a brilliant equaliser.

“After that we allowed them to dictate things and we paid the price.”

Knights: Smith, Worthington, Stevens (Simpson 65), Robson, Spafford (Burdass 34), Melson (Johnson 54), Millar, Foster, Williams (Perry-Burdett 80), Peasgood (Hardstaff 83), Weir-Daley.

Attendance: 101.
