LETTERS – Cyclists are not all the same

In response to Cyclists don’t use the paths, (October 29)
Firstly, don’t treat us cyclists all the same.
We don’t all wear Lycra, but wear high visibility clothing and where safe to do so, use cycleways that are provided.
They are not compulsory.
Secondly, Cyclists cause virtually zero structural damage to road surfaces compared to heavy motor vehicles.
A typical car or lorry causes tens of thousands of times more wear and tear than a lightweight bicycle.
Local road repairs and council maintained streets are funded through council tax and income/vat taxes, which cyclists pay regardless of whether they own a car.
So, if you pay tax, you pay for the roads.
Finally, I cover thousands of miles a year by cycle, and I am not obliged to use cycle lanes or cycle tracks, only where practicable.
Some cycle lanes are not useful, they are too narrow and place the rider too close to the kerb.
Cycle tracks vary too. Some are convenient, while others are badly lit, badly maintained or blocked by parked vehicles.
My message to fellow cyclists: One day we may get wonderful cycle facilities, in the meantime, if a cycle lane or track helps you, then use it: if it doesn’t, then don’t.
