Saturday football: Tulips held at home, Tigers end goal drought in latest defeat, Pinchbeck fall into drop zone after loss

The results for South Holland’s top sides Spalding United, Holbeach United and Pinchbeck United were almost as bad as the grim weather on Saturday.

Starting with Spalding, they at least picked up a point after being held to a 1-1 draw by Bedworth United in the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division.

The Tulips, again under the caretaker charge of Bruno Porfirio, were 1-0 down at at half time after a 33rd-minute strike from Ryan Nesbitt at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

But Spalding hit back when Ben Starkie grabbed his first goal for the club four minutes into the second period, keeping them eighth in the table but now ten points off the play-offs.

Down in the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North, Holbeach scored their first league goal since August – but were beaten 2-1 by Loughborough Students at Carter’s Park and remain both winless and bottom of the table.

After a goalless first period, high-flying Loughborough moved 2-0 up thanks to goals from Dylan Edwards (59) and Olusanya Fadahunsi (70).

Aaron Eyett did at least end one Tigers hoodoo in the closing stages with a fine strike, but the result sees Gary Frost’s side fall a worrying eight points from safety.

That’s after second-from-bottom Quorn handed Pinchbeck United a 2-0 beating to climb out of the drop zone – and drop the Knights into it.

Strikes from Charlie Marzano (41) and Jack Samples (60) did for the Knights, who are now 17th, one point from safety and seven clear of Holbeach.
