£25,000 revamp to bring 1820s Spalding church up to date

reformed smallWork began this week on a £25,000 refurbishment of part of Spalding United Reformed Church.

The sanctuary (worship area) of the Grade II listed building in Pinchbeck Road is undergoing a revamp, partly funded by legacies.

Major cracks in the walls and water damage are being repaired, updated lighting and audio-visual equipment is being installed and everywhere will be redecorated.

The Rev Robert Sheard said: “I think the last time it was painted would have been in the 1980s and the lighting is about 30 to 40 years old.”

However, despite the scaffolding and upheaval for an estimated six weeks, it’s very much business as usual at the 1820s church with services being held in the hall and 345 Nursery remaining unaffected.

The work is being carried out by local contractors after a tender process.

Rev Sheard, who has been minister for about three-and-a-half years, said: “I’d like to thank the fabric committee and church members for getting the project to this stage.

“If all goes to the plan, we are hoping to have a service of celebration on Sunday, September 14, at 10.30am.”

A number of generous donations has enabled the church to also invest in a new lectern.
