£1,100 raised in memory of Spalding RFC’s Henry Walkers

Staying quiet during rugby matches is not something which comes easy to Tony Walkers.

So a sponsored silence seemed a fitting challenge to fundraise in memory his brother Henry, a long-time member of Spalding Rugby Club and Spalding Town Cricket Club.

Tony was in his local in Somerset and managed to bite his lip for seven hours during the back-to-back final three matches of the Six Nations in March.
He said: “I’m very vocal when it comes to the rugby, but I was silent from the first whistle at 2.30pm to the very last one just before 10pm. I didn’t even speak between matches but I did have a chalkboard!”

Tony raised £1,100, with £700 going to Macmillan Cancer Relief and £400 to Spalding Hospice Foundation.

Henry (64) was cared for in The Tulip Suite of The Johnson Community Hospital before his death in November 2014.
