A woman is looking to beat The Great North Run in September alongside her friend just months after beating breast cancer.
Teresa Walton, of Weston, was diagnosed with the disease after a routine mammogram just two days after son Sam got married last July.
But after radiotherapy she was given the all clear on New Year’s Eve and is now busy raising money for Breast Cancer Care as a thank you to those that helped her.
She’ll be doing it alongside Sarah Willoughby, of Spalding, who works as a healthcare assistant at Munro Medical Centre who regularly works with cancer patients and who lost friend Karen to the disease four years ago.
Teresa said of her cancer treatment: “I was helped by so many friends and I couldn’t have got through it without them.
“Myself and Sarah have both done the Great North Run before.
“It’s a great event and we thought it was a perfect way to raise funds for Breast Cancer Now Charity.
“We applied for a charity place and need to raise £350 each but now our funds are nearly £3,000 and continuing to rise.”
The 13.1 mile run in and around Newcastle is still scheduled to go ahead on Saturday, September 13.
And the COVID-19 outbreak has not stopped the 53-year-olds’ training, nor their fundraising.
They’ve held numerous raffles and events, and a planned tea party for June 13 is set to go ahead anyway with guests being delivered their cream teas at home.
“We have had so much support from local businesses with raffle prizes and fantastic offers of food items for our afternoon tea,” Teresa continued. “We have now decided to deliver the 50 afternoon teas, social distancing of course and get a photo with each recipient.”
