Wing wizard Billy bags on his debut as Holbeach win pre-season opener

New signing Billy Smith was on the mark as Holbeach United kicked off their pre-season fixtures with a 3-2 victory at Skegness Town on Saturday.

Striker Will Bird and Spencer Tinkler were also among the goals for the Tigers, while Will Britton and Alex Nichols netted for the hosts at the Vertigo Stadium.

Holbeach, who then drew 2-2 with Spalding United on Tuesday night, impressed boss Seb Hayes – but he won’t read too much into pre-season results.

“It went well,” said the Tigers chief. “We had a good first half, then a sloppy start to the second.

“There were some good things from the lads and, obviously at this stage, some things we can work on. Pre-season is all about getting ready. We’ve done eight fitness sessions and the lads are looking good.

“At this stage of pre-season, I couldn’t really ask for more from the team.”

The Tigers are without a game this weekend, but do have a home friendly fixture against Wisbech St Mary on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

Hayes could have as many as two new faces in his squad by then, with both Kieran Hamilton and George Stainfield currently training with the Carter’s Park side.

Holbeach have already signed Jamie Stevens, Josh Ford, Jonny Clay, Tom Smith and Smith over the close season.

George Zuerner (Spalding), Mitch Griffiths (Peterborough Sports), Charley Sanders (Yaxley), Joe Smith (Sleaford) and Joe Braithwaite (Harrowby) are among those to leave.

Holbeach will face UCL Premier Division rivals Deeping Rangers in the FA Cup on August 11 and have been draw away at Sleaford or Holwell Sports in the first round of the UCL KO Cup.
