Soham Town Rangers 0 Spalding United 2
Spalding United ended their five-game winless streak with a convincing 2-0 victory at struggling Soham Town Rangers on Saturday.
Goals in each half from Sam Cartwright (12) and Liam Adams (47) gave the Tulips all three points against a Soham side that dropped to the foot of the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division’s after suffering defeat.
The victory at Julius Martin Lane moves Brett Whaley’s side back up to tenth place with just three games of the season left to play.
Boss Whaley was critical of his side the previous week, but was much more impressed by what he saw at Soham.
He said: “It’s a bit of relief to get that win, if I’m honest.
“I know that these games aren’t the most important in the grand scheme of things and we’re trying a few new things – but it’s never nice to go on a winless run.
“You can start to become a bit desperate and that’s never a good place to be.
“Both the results and performances haven’t been great lately, but this was much more like it.
“We’ve not really scored enough or taken control of games, so to score early goals in both halves was a big positive for me.
“We knew that Soham would be playing with pressure and were absolutely desperate to win the game as they try and stay up.
“But I thought we took command nicely. The work-rate was there and we used the ball very well on what was a very nice and big playing surface.
“The lads all wanted the ball and we kept it a lot better than we have been doing.
“Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t all plain sailing. I felt like our final ball or shot could have been better at times and there is obviously a lot more we can improve on.
“There are three games left now and it’s all about getting as much out of them as we can from my point of view.
“We want these matches at this stage of the season to mean something to us next season and the preparation for that continues.”
