Welland Yacht Club ace Prior takes top spot at Richard Glen regatta

Andy Prior took the spoils in Welland Yacht Club’s Richard Glen regatta on what was the last full day of sailing of the season.

Some nine boats took part on Sunday – including new junior Christopher Seaborn.

Although cold, the sun was shining with a fair breeze. From the start, the faster boats of Prior and Paul Burton opened up an early lead from Martin Cook, Paul Wilson, Lucy Burton, Mark Holland and young Seaborn.

It was close all the way to the finish, with Prior hanging on to handicap distance from Burton.

In the end, however, it was Burton who took the win from Prior by only two seconds, with Cook third.

For race two, the course was lengthened to take advantage of the conditions, while the fleet was joined by Brian Cobb.

From the start it was Burton who took the lead with Prior soon on his heels – this time determined to break the handicap difference.

Again, there was a close finish between the pair – but the win went to Prior from Burton, with Cook securing third.

The course remained the same for the final race, with only five boats taking to the start line.

Once again, Prior managed the win and gained overall victory from Burton in second, with Cook showing consistency to claim third.

This Sunday will see the start of the Frostbite Winter Series, featuring one race starting at 11.30am.
