‘Warrior’ wants to help others’ fight

A ‘warrior’ is helping launch a support group for people affected by breast cancer, as she says there’s no such service exists in the area.

Carol Houlden says she wants to provide the support she had to travel for at the Boxes of Hope charity where she is a receptionist.
The 65-year-old of Whaplode had a five year battle with breast cancer after being diagnosed aged 52.
Now, through the charity which is offering a host of services through its Holbeach hub, she wants to pass on the advice.
“We’ve had people come in here who are battling cancer and they say how lost they feel, and I certainly know what they mean,” said Carol, who describes herself as a breast cancer warrior. “My progress has been amazing and I wouldn’t be here today without the health care I received.
“But there was nowhere to go to meet people and say ‘this is my normality’.
“We want to set up that support group so people can come in and just have a coffee and talk.
“Many women don’t know how to check for breast cancer properly and I’d like to offer to teach them properly.”
October is breast cancer awareness month and to mark it, Carol is walking a mile every day for Breast Cancer Now.
Boxes of Hope is also hosting a tombola all month and it held a special fundraising day on Tuesday (October 15).
It’s also selling ‘Fight Like A Girl’ goods.
