Volunteer group helps in Holbeach cemetery research

The Holbeach Cemetery Chapels Trust has formed a volunteer study group to assist the trust with grave recording and research in Holbeach Cemetery.

The Holbeach Cemetery Research Group (pictured) held its inaugural meeting in September and already has 18 members.
Many of them worked with the trust to develop last weekend’s Reminiscence Day and Act of Remembrance Ceremony.

Project officer Trudy Shephard said: “We have received a lot of public interest in the project through our recent publicity, community and training events and many people wanted the opportunity to take a more active role in helping the Trust achieve their aspiration to save and restore the Chapels for public use.

“This group will enable members to participate in all aspects of research whether that’s using recognised archaeological fieldwork techniques to plot, record and photograph standing graves or the manual investigation using online genealogical websites and/or local archives to find out more about the local community.

“We are planning to share information with the public through our website, project newsletter and Facebook page and in time the group aims to support the Trust with fundraising, key community events and cemetery trails.”
