Twin away defeats leave Knights disappointed

Pinchbeck United collapsed to a 4-1 defeat at United Counties League relegation battlers Holwell Sports on Saturday after conceding three late goals.

An evenly matched first half saw JJ Ward come closest to breaking the deadlock when his 25-yard free-kick was tipped around the post.

The hosts took a 56th-minute lead but then had a player sent off.

The Knights, who included recent re-signing Jake Henderson from Boston Town, took full advantage to equalise within five minutes through Luke Cullen after a superb passage of play.

It looked as if Pinchbeck would go on to pull clear but it was Sports who regained the lead after 83 minutes and struck again after 89 and deep into stoppage time.

Knights manager Lewis Thorogood was bitterly disappointed with the result and said: “We have to collectively take full responsibility for our performance and we owe the club, the loyal volunteers and supporters who travel all over a response.”

A solid second-half performance was not enough to turn things round on Tuesday at Southwell City. The hosts scored three times without reply before the break with Flynn Slater and Jordan Haywood the closest to pulling one back.

Slater was denied after the break in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, while Connor Eyes and Haywood both headed off target from free-kicks as the Knights failed to get any reward for their second-half revival.
