Tilly’s top national achievement is marked by Spalding Cycling Club

A Spalding Cycling Club member has been given a commemorative jersey to mark winning her first national championship event.

Tilly Gurney won the National Grass Track Championship event her club hosted last year.

To celebrate the achievement, members of the club presented a special vest to her at its recent presentation evening.

The 22-year-old is originally from Deeping St Nicholas and started cycling with the club aged six.

She’s gone from strength to strength and has also previously won gold medals for Nottingham

University’s track cycling team, where she’s currently based.

NATIONAL STAR: Tilly Gurney with her jersey.

But Tilly still represents Spalding and was delighted to claim a national title in the bunch race held at Crowland’s Snowden Fields.

“It was really good to win the title,” she said. “As it was the one the club was holding it was the one I was particularly targeting.

“There were 12 competitors which is quite a big field given the first time I did it there was only four of us.

“It was quite a tough and tactical race over the 24 laps too, but I was able to get enough of a lead in the final half of the last lap to take the win.”

Tilly will be targeting more national glory in the forthcoming season where three more national grass events will be held, though sadly none in Spalding.

“It’s a nice little group of us that do the grass events and we actually look forward to competitions which are like a nice meet up for us,” she continued. “I’m looking forward to the season starting in May now.”
