Three funeral-goers ticketed in Holbeach

Three people attending a funeral in Holbeach on Tuesday returned to their cars to find they had been issued parking tickets.

Derek ‘Del-Boy’ Fryatt, of Cecil Pywell Avenue, Holbeach, was one of the ticketed attendees.

“We’ve all launched appeals,” he said of the three drivers who were fined for parking on Church Street.

“I was perfectly parked in a disabled bay but according to the enforcement officer, I hadn’t displayed my permit correctly,” he said of his parking position in a disabled bay by the former Holbeach library.

However, the council said the accompanying time clock wasn’t displayed, as per the conditions of the parking display.

“I’ll hold my hands up,” Mr Fryatt said, “I didn’t put the clock on.

“But nowhere does it say you have to. There is one parking space in Spalding that says you have to display it but this didn’t.”
Matt Jones, parking services manager at Lincolnshire County Council said: “Three tickets were issued in this area at this time.

“Two were for parking on yellow lines and one for parking in a disabled space with a blue badge but without a time clock.

“There was no indication that these vehicles were involved in a funeral.

“If anyone believes they have been ticketed unfairly, they can appeal, and circumstances will be taken into account.”

Mr Fryatt said he didn’t agree with the council’s statement that there was nothing to suggest a funeral was taking place.

“There was a hearse, three limousines as well. I’ve never seen Church Street so busy,” he said.

“To give out tickets in this circumstance really is over the top,” Mr Fryatt added.

“It just amazes me. You couldn’t have missed that we were all there for a funeral.

“I’ve got 11 witnesses that say I was parked correctly.

“I just feel to be honest that it is wrong.”
