Thorogood feels Pinchbeck United deserved draw in thriller at Melton

Melton Town 4 Pinchbeck United 3

Boss Lewis Thorogood felt his Pinchbeck United side deserved at least a point after seeing them go down 4-3 in a cracker at Melton Town on Saturday.

The Knights went ahead early on thanks to Harry Peasgood, but goals from Cameron Gilchrist (13), Zak Munton (28 and 52) and Cameron Smith (43) moved the hosts 4-1 ahead.

Kyle Onyon’s second-half double (70 and 85) – with the latter a 25-yard screamer – put Pinchbeck back in contention, but Dan Worthington headed a golden chance wide in the dying seconds to leave hosts Melton with all three points.

With relegation rivals Selston picking up a 1-1 draw against Leicester Nirvana, Thorogood’s Knights are now just a point clear of the drop zone having played four games more.

“We’ve struggled for goals this season,” admitted the Pinchbeck boss. “So to go away to one of the top six, score three…and still lose just about sums our season up.

“We went there with a plan and, for the first 15 minutes or so it seemed to work. We went ahead and looked good, but all of a sudden things changed and we found ourselves 3-1 down at half-time.

“We had words at the break and came out much better. I thought we looked dominant for most of the second half, but we let them break away and get a fourth.

“To the lads credit, they carried on playing and Kyle Onyon got two goals – which seemed to unsettle Melton, who were all over the place and fell apart.

“We perhaps should have equalised right at the end, Dan was free but sent his header just wide of the post.

“Overall, to go to a top six side and play so well is a big positive. Do I think we deserved at least a point? Yes. But at this point performances and goals are secondary to results for us.”

Knights: Smith, Worthington, Stevens, Spafford, Robson, Gagyi, Moyses, Johnson, Williams, Chipamaunga, Peasgood. Subs used: Cottingham, Onyon, Millar. Not used: Melson.

Attendance: 182.
