Table tennis round-up: TNC pip ‘Pinters’ to reach the Marylands Cup final

The Spalding and District Table Tennis League resumed with a league programme and the semi-finals of the Marylands Cup on Tuesday night.

With two Division One versus Division Two matches on the cards, the possibilities looked interesting.

Mine’s a Pint, sitting in the lower half of the top tier, faced TNC – who are clear at the top of the second tier.

The Pinters took the first game but lost the next two before levelling. It came down to the final singles, which went to three ends with TNC winning through.

There they will face Team TJ, who are steadily improving in Division Two, or top tier basement side Nets n Edges. After two games the advantage rests with the former, who won both.

In Division One, South Holland strengthened their position at the top with a 5-0 win over Outsiders. Jean White and Piotr Olstowska did the damage, winning all their games in straight ends with just one game reaching deuce.

Their closest rivals now are Moulton SE, six behind having played a match more.

Moulton had a mixed night going down 4-1 to Jokers and beating Mine’s a Pint 5-0. In the latter they lost all the singles, one game including an unusual 23-21 end, but won the doubles which helped give them a three-point cushion in the table.

The win over the Pinters, which had been postponed, had a mixture of close ends and simple losses.

Jokers also had a 5-0 win recorded from a postponed fixture against Underdogs.

Meanwhile, Underdogs were also defeating Mine’s a Pint 4-1 with Kelvin Preville notching up a double and Dylan Taylor adding one and helping to take the doubles.

Jeremy Hitcham scored for the losers.

Finally JDM completed their whitewash of Nets n Edges that had been held over and they sit in fourth.

In Division Two, Team TJ met Hurricane Brothers.

The singles were shared with George and Sam Wallis winning a game each, while Jack Sawyer took another double in the others, battling from two down in one of them. He then teamed up to take the doubles and win them the match.
