The Spalding and District Table Tennis League held another cup week, this time for the first round of the Guardian Cup.
In this event, four singles are played up to 33 points. The scores from the four games are totalled, then a hidden handicap is awarded to one of the teams.
Six of the seven matches were played, with four completed.
In a match between top-flight teams, leaders South Holland faced bottom team Nets n Edges. Holland got off to a blistering start with a 33-5 win, but the second end saw the ‘Edgers’ improve to go down 15-33.
The fourth end went to 33-22 to Holland before they took the final end to 15, giving them a total of 132 -57.
However the handicapper had given Edgers 80 more so they went through by five.
Another all-Division One match put Underdogs and Outsiders together. Underdogs lost the first end 13-33 but took the remainder to 12, 18 and 32 respectively. Outsiders received a further 29 and took the tie 124-112.
JDM, fielding a new pairing, faced Division Two leaders TNC.
JDM took three ends to 8, 32 and 17, but lost the second 25-33.
That gave them a lead of just 34 and TNC’s extra 62 saw them through by 28.
In an all-Division Two tie, Deeping Lads played Rusty Nails.
The latter’s experience not only gave them a lead of 132-89 win but proved to be enough to offset Lads extra 38 points.
Two matches were unfinished, Mine’s a Pint v Jokers and Team TJ v Moulton SE.
In the first the Pinters had a lead of 66-48 after two games, while TJ are in a very strong position while trailing 61-65 after two.
Nets n Edges had a busy night, also playing in the Marylands Cup against Hurricane Brothers. A close-run affair saw them get through 3-1, with four of the nine ends played going to 31-30 and the other five ending 31-27.
Edgers also completed their league match with Underdogs, losing the final singles to go down 1-4, and Underdogs themselves faced Outsiders taking a singles and doubles for a 3-1 lead.
