Table tennis round-up: It’s beginning to look tight at the top of Division One

The fifth round of league fixtures in the Spalding and District Table Tennis League saw the top of Division One closing up – while the opposite happened in the second tier.

Moulton SE have jumped to the top with a close fought match against fellow contenders JDM.

In a ding-dong match Moulton took the early lead through Stephen Appleby in five ends only to be pegged back by Tom Chesworth.

They retook the lead in the doubles, once more in five, but Chesworth levelled up again.

However, Andrew Appleby won the match, in five, for Moulton to move to the top of the table.

Jokers move to third ahead of JDM following a 5-0 victory over Mine’s a Pint.

Guntars Briedes and Wesley Roper dropped just one end, in the doubles, but four ends went to the deuce point in the singles.

Underdogs brought forward two matches, playing two games in each.

Against Nets n Edges Kelvin Preville took the first, but Reece Kerry levelled the tie.

The same thing happened in their match with Outsiders, Garry Wilkinson levelling this time.

In Division Two, Rusty Nails consolidated their lead at the top with a whitewash against Hit and Hope.

John Hayter and Richard Matthews dropped just one end in taking the points.

TNC are establishing their credentials with their third 5-0 win, moving to second spot.

This was against newcomers Deeping Lads, though they too dropped an end and were pushed to three deuce games. Jack Sawyer picked up another win in Team TJ’s 1-1 score against Assassins with Carlos Caneiro levelling for the latter.

Meanwhile South Holland have reached the final of the Moulton Shield competition, John Gilbert and Piotr Olstowska taking the tie against Mine’s a Pint in straight ends, 5-0.

  • Anyone else wishing to try the sport will be most welcome at the High School Sports Hall on a Tuesday evening from 7.30-10pm at £4 for the evening.
