Super start steers Spalding Indoor Bowls Club to success in Egham Trophy opener

Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s Egham Trophy mixed team started their campaign with a comfortable 51-shot win (89-38) against Leicester.

A strong start to the fixture was key for Spalding, who raced into an impressive 24-15 lead after five ends.

The lead was extended to 48-26 by ten ends and then a dominant 72-33 at 15 ends.

Leicester shook hands and accepted defeat with the rinks having played between 16 and 19 ends across the board.

The damage was largely done by the two home sets, skipped by Graham Smith and Martin Spencer who won 31-7 and 24-3 respectively.

Kevin Ekins and his rink also won away from home, but Jordan Philpott’s rink consolidated well as they found their opposition in top form.

A debut was handed to Karen Martin who performed exceptionally well in Spencer’s rink at home.

Next up for Spalding in the second round is Peterborough on Sunday, November 10.

Rink Scores: Home – Stephen Harris, Jean Patterson, Chelsea Tomlin and Graham Smith (won 31-7); Nick Wilkie, Karen Martin, Annie Dunham and Martin Spencer (won 24-3). Away – Lauren Finbow, Danielle Wild, Andy Dunham and Kevin Ekins (won 19-5); Ruby Hill, Julie Hicks, Martin Simpson and Jordan Philpott (lost 15-23).

  • Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s mixed county league team enjoyed an incredible result at home against Stamford on Saturday.

Despite winning on only one rink, they prevailed by three shots on aggregate (106-103) and 10-8 on points.

That winning rink for Spalding was skipped by John Needham, with John Laud, Janet Staples and Maggie Wheatley, who triumphed by a huge 39-9.

  • Last Thursday saw Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s over-60s county league team play hosts to Lincoln B.

The carpet had been stretched immediately before the game, meaning there were concerns that it might not give the home team the usual advantage.

However, by the tenth end Spalding were ahead by 26 shots and on three of the five rinks.

The lead was extended to 28 shots by 15 ends and Spalding put on a finishing surge to end the game 37 shots ahead, winning on three rinks and 14-4 on points.

The top winning rink was skipped by Ron Walpole, with Tony Westland, Mike Taylor and Ken Challans.

The next game for the over 60s will be at Lincoln on Thursday, November 21 – where they will be able to try the newly-laid blue carpet.

  • Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s friendly bowlers were on-song as they played host to Lincolnshire VPs.

Spalding got off to a decent start and took a slight lead, but the VPs had levelled the scores by the halfway mark.

Both sides battled hard to the very end, but the home side emerged victorious, winning on five of the six rinks and by six shots (94-88).

The top winning rink for Spalding was Jenny Collins, Alan Tokley, Bill Borst and skip, Roger Perkins, while the captains for the day were Jenny Horner and Phyl Borst.

The friendly bowlers will look forward to the return fixture in December.
