Sunday football: Sutton St James secure first leg of potential treble with Shield win

It was trophy time for Sutton St James on Sunday as they got their hands on the John Chappell Shield.

A double from Joseph Sutton secured a 2-0 victory over Fosdyke in the Spalding and District Sunday League competition at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

The victory is the first of a potential treble for St James, who are yet to be beaten in league fixtures this season and are also in the final of the League Knockout Cup – where they will meet title rivals Jubilee on April 28 (10.30am).

St James went ahead when Kurt Scott’s peeling run saw him nod the ball back into the box for Sutton to finish acrobatically.

The same two players combined for the second goal as Scott whipped in a cross for Sutton to beat the Fosdyke keeper to the ball at the near post and head home. Dan

Smith also pulled off a great save to keep Fosdyke from mounting a comeback, as SSJ held on to clinch the crown.

  • While Sutton St James were lifting silverware, Jubilee were busy knocking them off the top of the Spalding Sunday League.

Danny Maddison (2), Ryan Wheeler (2), Tom Panton, Bobby Patterson, Martin Sandall and Steve Sinfield got the goals for Paul Rudkin’s table-toppers as they battered Up The Fish Reds 9-0.

Jubilee visit St James on Sunday (10.30am).
