On Sunday, Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s county mixed league team had a good win away at Stamford in their penultimate game of the season.
Winning on two rinks and losing on two, Spalding won a closely contested match by eleven shots, 77-66 and won 10-4 on match points.
Top winning rink was skipped by David Nunney, with Carole Nunney, George Deaton and Betty Deaton who enjoyed a good 28-9 rink win.
This win certainly puts Spalding in with a chance of reaching the county final as they top the table by nine points but Skegness and Boston have games in hand in second and third place in the county south division.
Spalding’s final fixture will be away at Grantham on Saturday, March 4.
Rink scores: Carole Nunney, George Deaton, Betty Deaton and David Nunney – won 28-9; Ann Newbury, Petrine Ault, Mick Dolton and Anthony Cronin – won 21-13; Jan Sinclair, Sheila Chamberlain, Tim Rogers and Mick Jennings – lost 15-19; Tony Westland, Sue Slayven, Maggie Wheatley and Graham Wright – lost 13-25.
On Saturday, Louth & District Indoor Bowls Club hosted the Lincolnshire county sets singles playoffs.
Spalding’s representatives were Dominic McVittie, Kevin Ekins, Ruby Hill, Jordan Philpott and Dan Mills.
With wins against Alex Tomlin from Boston (2-0), Richard Allam from Stamford (2-1) and Adrian Field from Boston (1.5-0.5), Dominic continues his title defence and has qualified for the county semi-final where he will play John Holroyd from Stamford.
The other semi-final will be contested between Paul Oke from Sleaford and Richard Ashton from Lincoln.
County semi-finals are on Sunday, April 2 at Sleaford.
Unfortunately, Kevin Ekins lost 2-0 against Adrian Field and Dan Mills lost 2-0 against Alan Dent Jnr from Louth, both in the last 32.
Ruby Hill and Jordan Philpott both got to the quarter final but lost 2-1 against Richard Ashton and 1.5-0.5 against John Holroyd respectively.
On Friday, Spalding Lightning’s ladies progressed to the last 16 of the Mason Trophy with an extra end win against Charnwood.
The Mason Trophy is an over 60s competition played on a double rink basis, one rink at home, one away.
Spalding Lightning’s away rink started slowly but the overall scores were level (20-20) at ten ends.
The home rink skipped by Maisie Belding had a good 19-11 rink win whilst Julie Hicks’ away rink were only six shots adrift going into the last end which meant that they were defending two shots to secure a place in the next round.
Unfortunately, Spalding Lightning dropped two shots which meant that the scores were tied and an extra end was required to decide the outcome of the match.
This was played at Spalding and was nerve racking for both players and spectators.
Jean Patterson promptly played her first bowl within inches of the jack and it stayed that way to boom Spalding Lightning’s place in the next round where they will play Nottingham on Friday, March 3.
Rink scores: Home rink – Jean Patterson, Jan Sinclair, Sandra Hammond and Maisie Belding – won 20-11 (after extra end); Away rink – Ann Newbury, Carole Nunney, Betty Deaton and Julie Hicks – lost 12-20.
