Street art could soon be coming to South Holland with the blessing of the district council.
A new policy around the whole issue of graffiti and art is being drawn-up with plans to allow artists to work with permission on council-owned property.
Hundreds of people signed a petition last year supporting the move after artists Karl Barfoot and Adam Sadd won fans with their artwork on the old arches at the bottom of Mitchell Drive in Spalding.
Both artists said it would be good for the town if there could be a designated area for artists to work – and they volunteered to look after it.
Now South Holland District Council has put together its first policy around the subject and the artwork initiative is set to go ahead.
“South Holland recognises the importance of legal street art in contributing to a vibrant, local community.
Street art can enhance the appearance and amenity of public spaces,” says a report which was due to go before the policy development panel on Wednesday. It could even be adopted across the South East Lincolnshire Partnership and be used in other districts.
Artists will have to have permission for their designs ahead of starting but the move has been welcomed by Karl who said ‘any steps’ were better than no steps.
“We hope eventually to have a free range, but this is a start and it will be good for the area,” said Karl.
