Spalding’s Sainsbury’s to lose café

Spalding’s Sainsbury’s store is set to lose its café as the latest round of closures have been announced by the supermarket.

A huge shake-up will see just 67 cafes remain and 2,000 jobs have been put at risk by the move.

It will also be closing its less popular hot food counters in 34 of its stores.

The company released a list of the stores which are retaining their cafes and Spalding is not on it.

The stores in Lincoln and at King’s Lynn’s Hardwick roundabout are retaining their cafes, however.

The company’s chief executive officer Simon Roberts said a ‘difficult decision’ had been taken.

“As we go through this period of transition, we have taken the difficult decision to close 200 of our cafes next month,” said a statement.

“We have spoken to all colleagues affected by these changes and are absolutely committed to supporting them in any way we can during this uncertain time.”

Under the review, The Restaurant Hub model, currently at its Selly Oak store, is likely to be rolled out.

It means that cafes will be replaced with chain operators such as Starbucks and Gourmet Burger Kitchen.

Many branches of the supermarket have already closed fresh fish, cheese and meat counters and the store will ‘simplify’ the way it runs its bakery counters.

“We understand this is very upsetting for our colleagues, but we must keep adapting our business,” said Mr Roberts.
