Spalding United should be well prepared for tough trip to high-flying Halesowen

Spalding United face one of their toughest away games of the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division season on Saturday.

Hot on the heels of Tuesday’s 2-1 Lincs FA Senior Cup semi-final defeat against League Two side Scunthorpe United, the Tulips visit title chasing Halesowen Town (3pm).

Boss Brett Whaley knows it’ll be a tricky test for his side, but reckons that playing higher-graded Scunthorpe – who bossed possession at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field – will have served as the perfect preparation for the game.

Whaley will be without striker Dylan Edge, who missed the Scunthorpe defeat, but has an otherwise full strength squad to pick from as he bids to make it two league wins on the spin.

“I think the Scunthorpe game will be ideal preparation for Halesowen,” said the Tulips chief. “On their own pitch, which is a good one, they like to get the ball down and play.

“It’ll be another tough one, but we will be well prepared, that’s for sure.”

Halesowen go into the clash in second place, level on points with leaders Ilkeston Town. That’s some 25 points better off than Spalding, who are down in 12th.

Spalding are also in action on Tuesday night, with Whaley’s former side Wisbech Town the visitors to the Sir Halley (7.45pm)
