Spalding United bid to finish off season with a flourish as Whaley aims to finish as high as possible

Brett Whaley wants to see one last push from his Spalding United side as they bid to finish in the top half of the Pitching In NPL Midlands Division.

The Tulips face an energy-sapping double header over the weekend as they host Corby Town on Saturday (1.30pm) before making the trip to play-off hopefuls Carlton Town on Monday (3pm).

Their season concludes the following Saturday with a home date against third-placed Chasetown at the Sir Halley (3pm), with boss Whaley hoping to end on a high.

“Of course we’d like to finish in the top half,” said the Spalding supremo. “It’s now about finishing as high as we can.

“I’d like the gap between us and the top of the table to be as small as possible, but it’s always difficult to play at Easter.

“We all have two games in three days, meaning there’s always a lot of stiff limbs on the Monday. It’s the same for everyone and you can see some funny results.

“We’ve got a young squad and certainly have players capable of playing both games, but of course there will be chances for all of the squad to impress.

“Two of our last three games are against sides still fighting for something, so we’ll have to be on our game. It’ll be tiring, but we need one last push before the season ends.”

The highest Spalding can finish is eighth, but they’d need three wins and Sporting Khalsa to lose all of their remaining games. The lowest they could drop to is 15th if results went against them.
