Spalding United battle back to beat Borough and book Boston United cup clash

Spalding United 4 Grimsby Borough 1

Spalding United booked a mouth-watering Lincs FA Senior Cup quarter-final with Boston United after seeing off Grimsby Borough 4-1 on Tuesday night.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for the Tulips at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field, though, as they were forced to come from behind to secure safe passage into the last eight.

Indeed, Adam Drury fired the visitors ahead on 25 minutes as they looked to pull off an upset.

But Spalding had other ideas and duly levelled five minutes before the break when Bradley Rolt finished from close range following good work from Archie Jones.

The Tulips then took command early in the seond half with sub Dylan Edge making an instant impact to put his side ahead for the first time with a fine finish.

Grimsby’s Tom Sawyer saw red soon after as tempers threatened to boil over before Toby Hilliard made it 3-1 on 82 minutes at the third time of asking, having hit the bar twice beforehand.

There was still time for Edge to head home his second and Spalding’s fourth in the closing stages, as Brett Whaley’s side ensured that they’d be hosting higher-graded Boston United in the next round on a date to be confirmed.

Next up for the Tulips is another cup clash as they visit Pitching In NPL Midlands Division rivals Dereham Town in the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Tulips: Duggan, Draper Marshall (Bucciero 75), Barker, Stainfield, Cartwright, Jones, Clifton (Broccoli 75), Sandy (Hilliard 60), O’Brien (Moreman 70), Rolt (Edge 46).
