Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s ladies raise a grand sum for Amazon Children’s Ward

The ladies’ section of Spalding Indoor Bowls Club have handed over a cheque for £1,100 to the Amazon Children’s Ward at Peterborough Hospital.

The Children’s Ward was the ladies’ nominated charity for the 2017/18 season and the cheque included over £700 that was raised from two cake stalls held in December 2017 and March 2018.

The sale of books, jigsaws and second-hand bowls clothes also contributed to the amount raised, together with funds being raised at summer drives and the 2018 President’s Day raffle.

Stacey Slater, who is the Play Leader on the Amazon Children’s Ward, was on hand to receive the generous cheque from ladies’ President Gloria Haney and Chairman Maisie Belding.

She said: “The funds will go towards the purchase of learning and play equipment for the ward which has 30 beds for children up to the age of 16, who come on to the ward from all departments of the hospital, including oncology.”

  • Spalding IBC kicked off their Top Club campaign with a comfortable 12-4 home victory over Boston on Sunday.

The first points on the board were bagged by Spalding’s Chelsea Tomlin, who won the ladies’ singles.

That was quickly followed by a win in the men’s singles by Stephen Harris.

With a win in both singles, this meant that Spalding – winners of the competition back in 2015 – only needed one more win out of the pairs, triples and fours and win the overall aggregate score to ensure a safe passage into the second round.

Although Boston fought back with a win in the pairs, comfortable wins in the triples and fours, mean that Spalding now play away at Sleaford in the next round on November 18.

Rink scores: Ladies’ singles – Chelsea Tomlin won 21-18; Men’s singles – Stephen Harris won 21-14; Pairs – Ruby Hill and Jordan Philpott lost 8-17; Triples – Andy Dunham, Annie Dunham and Martin Spencer won 17-8; Fours – Lauren Finbow, Danielle Wild, Martin Simpson and Graham Smith won 23-10.

  • Spalding IBC started their Denny Cup campaign with a 86-68 victory over Stamford on Saturday.

Debuts were handed to Steve Hill and 15-year-old Nathan Puttrell, who played number two in the rinks skipped by Graham Smith and Martin Spencer respectively.

Stephen Harris also played his first game for Spalding in the Denny Cup after transferring from Stamford.

The competition is played on a two rinks at home and two away format.

In what was a competitive match all the way through, the damage was done at home with wins for Smith and Spencer’s rinks, while the rinks skipped by Jordan Philpott and Kevin Ekins did an excellent job keep it tight away.

Next up for Spalding is Lincoln on November 3.

  • Spalding IBC’s mixed league team enjoyed an excellent home win against Lincoln on Saturday.

With two rink wins, they secured a 12-6 points win and 95-92 on aggregate.

The two winning rinks were Chris Williamson, Maisie Belding, Rob West and Mick Jennings and Freda Lyon, Ab Belding, Gill Needham and Graham Wright.
