Spalding Indoor Bowls Club sides kick off their respective trophy hunts with wins

Saturday saw Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s men and women being their respective campaigns in the Denny Cup and Yetton Trophy.

Both matches were played on a two rinks at home and two away basis – and both teams were drawn against Peterborough.

In the Denny Cup, the men started extremely well and were already 27-8 over the four rinks by five ends.

The lead was extended throughout the game as they were 54-26 up at ten ends and 78-37 at 15 ends before closing out a comfortable 116-52 win.

They won on all four rinks but the biggest winning margin came from one of the home rinks skipped by Jordan Philpott, with Kevin Ekins, Steve Hill and Martin Spencer as they returned a set success of 36-11.

In the Yetton Trophy, Spalding IBC’s women also won on all four rinks as they triumphed 104-57.

It was largely even early on as Spalding were only four shots ahead (19-15) at five ends.

But the match was probably won over the next ten ends as the women really got a foothold into the game and were 70-37 up by 15 ends.

The lead was extended slightly before they secured a 47 shot winning margin.

As was the case for the men, one of the home rinks did the main damage.

Skipped by Barbara Hurst, with Jean Patterson, Gill Haydon and Maggie Wheatley, they had an impressive 34-8 rink win.

Next up in round two for both teams is Stamford on Saturday, November 20.

Rink Scores: Denny Cup: Home – Kevin Ekins, Steve Hill, Martin Spencer and Jordan Philpott won 36-11; Stephen Harris, Martin Simpson, Graham Smith and Mathew Orrey won 24-10.

Away – Harry Mycock, Lewis Parnell, Andy Dunham and Dominic McVittie won 30-13; Nigel Eagle, Mike Robertson, Ean Morton and Tristan Morton won 26-18.

Yetton Trophy: Home – Jean Patterson, Gill Haydon, Maggie Wheatley and Barbara Hurst won 34-8; Freda Lyon, Jan Sinclair, Sandra Hammond and Maisie Belding won 27-16.

Away – Ann Newbury, Michelle Billingsley, Ruby Hill and Betty Deaton won 27-12; Carole Nunney, Barbara Cave, Chris Jackson and Julie Hicks won 16-15.

  • Spalding IBC’s under-30s double triples team raced into round three with a comfortable 38-9 win against Melton Mowbray on Sunday.

The competition is played on a one rink at home and one away basis.

The home and away rink had impressive wins as, skipping at home, Jordan Philpott – with Ruby Hill and Lewis Parnell – won 18-5.

Meanwhile, the away rink of Ollie Jeapes, Stephen Harris and Dominic McVittie won handsomely 20-4.

With the match clearly out of Melton’s reach, the tie was conceded at 13 ends.

Next up for the team are Lincoln on Saturday, November 27.

  • Spalding Indoor Bowls Club’s friendly section played host to a team from Boston on Sunday – and yet again triumphed over the opposition.

The game was far from one sided, though, as Boston initially took the lead and maintained it for the early part of the game.

However, Spalding did not give in and before too long they managed to sneak into the lead, albeit by only ten shots overall.

Nevertheless, Spalding persevered and closed the game by winning on five of the six rinks and with a shot advantage of 108 to Boston’s 75.

The home team’s best winning rink, with a healthy 29-7 win, was the team of Edna Perkins, Gill Haydon and skip Ian Stafford.

Spalding’s captain of the day was Roger Perkins and the next game is home to Melton Mowbray on Sunday (November 14) followed by an away game to the Cambs VPs at Peterborough.
