Spalding Golf Club’s May Medal goes West as JM bags countback victory

Two superb scores of nett 66 made Spalding Golf Club’s May Medal one to remember.

Played in superb conditions at the Surfleet course, no less than 15 of the 150-plus competitors were able to break par for the round.

Leading the way was JM West, who edged out Mark Payne after both managed stellar scores of 66.

One shot behind was talented youngster Hugo Kedzlie on 67, with Trevor Horrocks and Keith Hearne a further shot back on 68.

Calum Lewis, James Crampton and Tommy Langford were next with scores of nett 69.

  • Spalding’s first team remain winless in this season’s South Lincs Scratch League after a 5-1 defeat at Sleaford.

Only skipper Andy Grimwood and Hugo Kedzlie managed wins for Spalding.

The second team, skippered on the day by Tigger Johnson, fared better with a 3.5-2.5 win.

Victorious pairs for Spalding were Mark Payne and Harry Hunt, Lawrie Haley and Tom Ladbrook, Dave Perrott and Simon Rothwell, with Matt Richardson and Nick Holmes halving their match.

  • Two matches in quick succession for Andy Rafferty and Spalding’s 3rd team yielded mixed results.

They managed a hard-fought 4-2 win against Stoke Rochford, with the winning pairs being Andy Elms and Trev Horrocks, Del Murphy and Robin Exley, Mick Bell and Neil Smith, and Kev Siddle and Simon Rothwell.

That was followed up with a 4-2 loss away to Boston.

  • Club captain Dave Tasker enjoyed different fortunes in their recent mixed fixtures. A 4.5-1.5 loss at King’s Lynn (winning pair Tasker and Chris Huggins) was followed up with a 6-4 win at home.

Winning pairs for Spalding were Tasker and Paula Brown, Wayne Wallace and Angela Roper, Maurice Crunkhorn and Ann Tasker, Steve Watson and Carole Holland, Rod Filby and Chris

Vickers and Roy Blake and Sybil Thorpe.

  • Seniors’ section: A very successful Senior Men’s Open was held at the Surfleet course on May 13 – with 160 players taking part from 38 different clubs.

First place went to Ian Stockdale (Melton) and Ian Carroll (Belton Park) with 46pts, ahead of Jeff Kemp and Trev Horwood (Torksey) in second on 44 points.

Leading the way for the home club were Bob Pearson and Tony Jarvis (Spalding) with 43 points, as they took third place on on countback from Mike Wisbey and John Morris (The Cambridgeshire).

Spalding’s Roy Foden and Michael German were fifth with 42 points.

Nearest to the pin on the ninth hole was Trevor Howard (Heacham Manor) with a distance of 15.5 inches.

Players with successful 2s were Barrie Wigmore (North Shore), Mike Wisbey (The Cambridgeshire), Roy Preston (Sleaford), Trevor Howard (Heacham Manor), Neil Gambol (The Hertfordshire), Peter Lamming (Sleaford), D Radley (Lingdale), Alan Weston (Ramsey) and Ian Carroll (Belton Park), as well as Spalding members Roger Davey, Brian Freir, Keith Smith, Martin Spenceley and John Camm.

  • Seniors’ result: South Kyme 4 Spalding 4 (John Camm and John Beba won 3&2, Roger Davey and Shaun Gibson won 4&3, Ray Andrew and Pete Sanders won 2up, Ian Jones and Johnny Walker won 3&2, Mike Gould and Andy Ladbrook lost 1 down, Ron Sudbury and Brian Reynolds lost 4&2, Tony Holbrook and Malcolm Hole lost 1 down and Steve Leggett and Alan Pritchard lost 2&1).
  • Ladies’ section: Debra Ward emerged as the winner of the 27-hole Mary Hendry competition in Spalding Golf Club’s ladies’ section.

Heavy rainfall at the Surfleet course saw a few of the ladies pull out, but Ward braved the conditions and a nett 71 for the morning round gave a total of 110 for 27 holes.

This resulted in a handicap cut of one stroke.

Second was Angela Roper with a morning round of 74 and 112.5 overall. She also enjoyed a handicap cut. Third went to Paula Brown (78 and 116.5).

  • Friendly result: Spalding 3 Sleaford 1 (Hannah Thorold & Elizabeth Holbrook won 1up, Jacquie Claire & Sue Dewar won 7&6, Anita Cross & Anne Ellis lost 2 down, Theresa Starbuck and Carol Thomas won 4&3).
