Spalding Golf Club’s ladies edge into last 16 of Annodata competition with dramatic win

Spalding Golf Club’s ladies moved into the last 16 of the Annodata knockout competition after a sudden-death win against Ruddington Grange Golf Club at the Surfleet course.

Tilly Garfoot halved her match, while Angela Roper won 5&3, Paula Brown lost 1 down, Lesley Williams won 1 up and Mathilde Kedzlie lost 2 down. This meant a halved match and a sudden death play-off, which Spalding won on the first additional hole.

Some 44 Spalding ladies contested the annual President’s Day competition, hosted by Jean White.

It was an 18-hole Stableford competition played from rotating red, yellow and white tees in pairs. The winners, with a magnificent 87 points, were Gill Dewhurst, Elaine Harrison and Kay Green.

Eden Inglis, Lainey Macleman and Chris Vickers came home second with a cool 77.

  • Spalding enjoyed a 4-0 friendly win over Woodhall Spa at the Surfleet course.

Beryl Clay and Sally West (2up), Margaret Barkway and Lynda Double (8&7), Chris Vickers and Chris Leggett (1up) and Julie Gooderson and Carole Holland (6&4).

Spalding also won a friendly 3-1 at Belton Park.

Theresa Starbuck and Nicki Weller (3&2), Shirley Gurbutt and Jackie Claire (1up), Margaret Barkway and Gill Dewhurst (3&2) all won, while Jenny Wilson and Eileen Bridge lost 4&3.

  • Albert Jacobs topped the scoreboard in Division One of Spalding’s Senior Bogey competition.

His score of +5 was enough to edge out Graham Roach and Phil Packard, who both managed the same total.

In Division Two, Roach led the way with his +5, with Keith Cross (+4) and Rex Livington (+3) completing the top three.

Seniors’ result: Spalding 6 Sutton Bridge 2 (Peter Jullien & Dennis Farnsworth halved; Albert Jacobs & Mike Browning won 4&3; Monty Brittain & Jim Dobson won 7&5; John Keeton & Andy Ladbrook won 4&3; Rick Edwards & Alan Pritchard won 5&4; John Moses & Phil Smith won 4&3; Neil Wilkinson and Peter Dewar halved; Gary King & John Sharrocks lost 2&1).

  • Spalding men’s 3rd team edged to one of their most hard-fought victories of the season so far after piping Belton Park 3.5-2.5 on home soil.

Captain Greg Wright and vice Pete Spencer were out for a touch of revenge following the decisive loss they suffered on the away fixture – and with the help of what seemed to be a magic putter they delivered a win of 6&5.

The other winning pairs for Spalding were Dave Venables and Rick Denton and Stu Parker and Tony Prince, while Ian Stockdale and Mark Sanderson brought home the much-needed half at Surfleet.
