Spalding Golf Club duo Ruth and Mo win Presidents Putter again after 28-year wait

The final of Spalding Golf Club’s Presidents Putter winter foursomes knockout competition proved to be a close-run affair.

Contested between the ladies’ section pairs of Olive Gooderson and Sue Matthews and Ruth Atkins and octogenarian Mo Wallace, there was no shots given between them.

Both sides built up a two-hole lead at one stage, before being brought back to level again. The match was still all square after 16 holes before Atkins and Wallace won the 17th hole and held on to their 1up advantage by getting a half on the 18th. Atkins and Wallace last won this trophy 28 years ago in 1989.

  • Spalding ladies’ first individual competition of 2017 was played on a glorious spring day with 40 ladies taking part at the Surfleet course.

The winner, with 35 points, was Olive Gooderson.

She was two points clear of Lesley Williams (33 points), with Jackie Bailey-Scott taking third place on count back from Mo Wallace and Elaine Hancock, who all scored 32 points.
