Snooker round-up: Pyramid C’s winning start is halted by Holbeach D show

Holbeach D put the skids on Pyramid C’s flying start to the Spalding and District Snooker League Division One season by shading a very close clash on Thursday night.

In a clash that saw Paul Blackbourne (R14) and Paul Daw (O28) make breaks of 32 and 27 respectively, it was all level going into the final frame between Ian Woodberry (R7) and Alfonso Palumbo (O49).

In the end, it was Woodberry who edged out his illustrious opponent to give his Holbeach side a 4-2 victory and sentence Pyramid C to a first loss of the season.

Staying in the top tier, Services A enjoyed a fine 4-2 success at Bourne SC A.

A 33 clearance and breaks of 30 and 22 from star man Mark Gray (O105) couldn’t help the Bourne side, with Martin Spencer (O7) impressing with a 26 break for the victorious Spalding team.

The score was also 4-2 in an all-club affair between Costi E and Consti G, with the latter emerging victorious.

Bren Bowman (O56) impressed with a 33 clearance and 25 break and Nathan Wilson (O21) added a 26 break for the E side, but it was Joe Garland’s (scr) final frame victory which proved to be decisive.

Pyramid D went one better as they saw off Donington C 5-1, with James Sharpe (O49) finishing with a clearance of 22 and breaks of 29 and 20.

In Division Two, Bourne SC C kept their perfect start going as they saw off hosts Holbeach F 5-1.

Despite a black ball success from David Lefley (R7), wins from Sean Jeynes (O7), Chris Page (scr), Adam Braybrook (scr) and Michael Harrison (scr) saw the early pace-setters home.

Also 5-1 winners were Sutton Bridge A, who eased past Consti H.

Thomas Horspool (O42), Shane Balding (O28) and Wayne Howard (O21) made breaks of 39, 36 and 34 respectively for the victors.

It was 5-1 as Donington A got past Services E, but the game was much tighter with two frames going to the final black. Tony Scully (O28) finished the match off with a 27 clearance in the last frame.

Staying with that theme, Consti F enjoyed a 5-1 home win of their own as they dispatched Boundary B.

The only frame they dropped was the opener, as Mick Walker (O38) pipped Robert Adams (O14) on a re-spotted black.

Elsewhere in Division Two, four of the five frames went to the last black as Holbeach B saw off hosts Services B 4-2.
Barry Haynes (O7) won the final frame to decide the contest in Holbeach’s favour.

Down in Division Three, both Consti C and Pyramid E lost their unbeaten records.

Consti C slipped up 5-1 against club mates Consti I, while Pyramid E were edged out 4-2 at Gosberton B.

John Clapton (scr) made a 25 break for the Bourne side, but he lost the final frame against Simon Slinger (R14) on the final black.

Services D were the big winners of the week, putting hosts Pyramid B to the sword 6-0 despite a 28 break from Spencer Dawkins (O56).

The winners for the Spalding side were Mark Howlett (O7), Ady Liquorish (R14), Jake Haslam (R7), George Neary-Philips (O7) and Tanya Peel (scr).

Another side winning handsomely were Consti J, who got the better of Consti A 5-1. The closest clash on the night saw Peter Orange (R7) pip Martyn Johnson (R21) on the black.
