Snooker round-up: Pyramid A clinch top tier title with typical win, Knight makes fine 74 break

Pyramid A are the new Spalding and District Snooker League Division One champions after beating third-placed Pyramid C 4-2 on Thursday night.

Needing just a point to be sure of the title with a game to spare, Mick Twell’s (R14) second frame success was enough to seal the crown.

But the long-term leaders weren’t done there and further victories from Matthew Chapman (scr) and, in the final frame, Dean Cole (O7), sealed a 23rd win of the season for the new champions.

Team-mates Victor Rouse (O7) and John Twell (O14) were both beaten on the night, but played big roles throughout the rest of their championship season.

Elsewhere in the top flight, there were a number of big breaks recorded.

Leading the way was the league’s most heavily handicapped player Mark Gray (O105), who starred with knocks of 85 and 68 as Bourne SC A won 5-1 at Sutton Bridge B.

Team-mates Ian Gibson (R7) and Oliver Player (O28) also chipped in with a 30 break and 22 clearance respectively.

Another to impress was Mike Knight (O21), who sank a stellar 74 break for Services C, despite them going down 4-2 at second-placed Holbeach C.

Shaun Lee (O28) bagged a 27 break in reply for Holbeach, while Mark Gregory (O35) sealed their win in the final frame.

At the other end of the table, rock-bottom Pyramid D boosted their survival hopes by beating Services C 4-2. Pete Grose (scr) was the match-winner in frame five.

Also victorious in the top tier were Holbeach B, who knocked off hosts Donington C 5-1 with Donald Monk (O7) sinking a 31 break.

In Division Two, Donington A were on fine form as they dispatched hosts Gosberton A 6-0. Tony Scully (O35) completed the whitewash with a 23 break en-route to winning the final frame.

At the foot of the table, the bottom two both won 4-2 to bunch up those embroiled in the relegation battle.

Basement side Donington B got the better of hosts Holbeach B to keep their hopes of survival alive, despite a 28 break from Neil Harvey (O14).

One point ahead of them are Holbeach F, who beat third-from bottom Whittlesey C 4-2 thanks to a final frame success from David Lefley (21).

Holbeach F team-mate Dan Mayfield (O28) also impressed in that clash as he sank a 31 break en-route to winning the second frame of the match.

Meanwhile, Mick Walker (O35) made a 31 break for fellow strugglers Boundary B, but they lost 4-2 against high-flying Bourne SC B.

In Division Three, Consti I kept their title hopes alive with a 5-1 win at Whittlesey A. Jonathan Smith (R21), David Twelves (O14), Stewart Wells (R14) and Pete Stokes (R7) were all winners.

That’s after leaders Pyramid B went down 4-2 against Consti D to set up an exciting finale to the season.

Also 5-1 winners were third-placed Services D, who have games in hand on the two above.

Gosberton D also grabbed another win as they dispatched Consti C 4-2.
