Snooker round-up: Magic Mark lights up the league with 89 clearance

A magnificent 89 clearance from cue ace Mark Gray lit up the second round of fixtures of the Spalding and District Snooker League on Thursday night.

The league’s most heavily handicapped player, Bourne SC A’s Gray (O105) made the stunning finish in a 5-1 derby defeat at Pyramid C in Division One.

Indeed, he was BSC’s only winner as Jason Green (O63), Paul Blackbourn (R14), Dave Pearson (O7) and Alfonso Palumbo (O49) all won their frames – with the latter making a 31 break of his own.

Also in the top tier, Consti B raced to a 6-0 victory over club mates Consti E.

John Keeton (O7), Steve Spencer (R14), John Christian (scr), Mick Johnson (O35) and Martin Fear (O7) all secured frame victories.

Another side on-song were Pyramid A, who dispatched Holbeach D.

John Twell (O7) made a 22 clearance for the Bourne side in the final frame.

The other three matches in Division One were much closer and finished 4-2.

Consti C shaded Pyramid D, with Mark Wilkinson’s (O21) final frame triumph over Pete Jackson (scr) key.
Lee Davies (O14) made a 22 clearance in that one.

It was also 4-2 as Services A pipped club rivals Services C, with Chris Dunmore (O21) making a cool 22 clearance to clinch a vital black-ball success over Geoff Hemsil (R21).

Rounding off the tight tussles was Boundary A’s victory over Sutton Bridge B, as Mick Mitchell (R14) and Steve Smith (R14) won the final two frames, both against the unlucky Stuart Atkin (O49).

In Division Two, Bourne SC C were the big winners as they dispatched Services B 6-0.

Sean Jeynes (O7) and Jack Chilvers (O14) made breaks of 22 and 20 respectively for the victors.

Another team to win big were Holbeach B, who knocked off Whittlesey C 5-1.

A 20 break from Neil Harvey (O14) in frame two was their highlight in what proved a handsome victory.

The score was also 5-1 as Sutton Bridge A handed Boundary B a home reverse, with only a final frame triumph from Jim Howe (O49) denying the visitors maximum points.

Elsewhere, Carl Wand’s (O7) 22 break helped Gosberton A beat Consti F, while a 24 from Lee Pickett (O21) guided Holbeach E to a win of the same score against Holbeach F.

A 23 break from Gary Surridge (O14) also helped Bourne SC B win 4-2 at Services E in the second tier.

Down in Division Three, James Elliott (scr) pocketed a 22 break for Gosberton C – but saw his side soundly beaten 5-1 at Services D.

There was better news for Gosberton B as they picked up a fine 5-1 win over friendly foes Gosberton D, though.

It was 5-1 once again as Pyramid E got the better of Consti A, despite a typical 23 break from Nick Savic (O56).

Meanwhile, an all-Consti affair saw the J side edge out the I team 4-2.

It was all over after three frames as Les Andrew (scr), Trevor Braybrook (R7) and Neville Vickers (R14) made a flying start with wins.

Another Consti derby saw the C side beat the D team 4-2, with Kevin Sweeney (scr) sealing the success in the final frame.

Another clash to go to the final frame saw Whittlesey B beat rivals Whittlesey A 4-2, with Michael Foster (O14) winning the clincher on the final black of the match.
