Snooker round-up: Holbeach A holding all the cards in top tier title race

Holbeach A are now firmly in the driving seat for the Spalding and District Snooker League Division One title after opening up a five-point lead at the top.

Having taken over at the summit the previous week, Holbeach saw off Long Sutton A 5-1 on Thursday night to announce themselves as the new frontrunners for the league’s top prize.

Frame wins from Mick Pearl (O14), Mick Ayres Jnr (R14), Colin Dodds (O14) and Mick Ayres (O7) got the job done for Holbeach on their own baize.

Fellow title hopefuls Pyramid B slipped up again, this time 4-2 against friendly foes Pyramid A, to fall further off the pace in third.

Not even a fine 30 break from Alfonso Palumbo (O49) in the final frame could lift their mood, with Michael Twell (R14), Matt Chapman (scr) and Norman Vaughan (O7) the A team winners.

Away from the race for honours, a 35 break from Neil Reynolds (O49) wasn’t enough to inspire Donington C as they went down 4-2 at home against Services F.

Jack Chilvers (O21) starred with a 29 break for the victorious Spalding side.

Also winners were Bourne SC A, who edged past hosts Services C 4-2.

Oliver Player’s (O28) 27 break was the highlight for the Bourne boys.

There was a big 5-1 victory for Holbeach D, too, as they knocked off Holbeach C. A 22 break from Neil Grant (scr) helped them on their way.

In Division Two, the showing of the week came from Consti H as they waltzed to a handsome 6-0 success at Holbeach B.

Seb Grimston (O21) led the charge with breaks of 33 and 21, while Doug Garfoot (O21) and Jason Houghton (scr) added scores of 23 and 20 respectively.

Towards the top of the table, it was a good week for Pyramid D as they got the better of club-mates Pyramid C 4-2. James Sharpe (O42) pocketed a 23 break in that one for the third-placed D team.

A point behind them in fourth are Long Sutton B, who beat visitors Crowland B 5-1.

A cool 23 break in a black-ball win from Wayne Howard (O28) was their highlight.

Down in Division Three, two of the top three suffered defeats. Second-placed Holbeach E went down 5-1 at Donington D as Pat Taylor (R14) sank a solid 21 break.

Behind them, Long Sutton C slipped up 4-2 at Whittlesey A despite a fine 29 break from Dan Mayfield (O35). Lol Hailstone (R14) settled that clash in the final frame.

Meanwhile, a 21 break from Vince Fitter (O28) helped Services D wallop Whittlesey B 6-0.

Also on winning form were Gosberton C, who crushed Consti C 5-1 despite a 21 break from Stu Gravil (O14) in the final frame.

Pyramid E enjoyed a 4-2 victory at Gosberton B, too.
