Snooker round-up: Ayres’ awesome 53 inspires Holbeach A victory

A magnificent 53 break from Mick Ayres helped send Holbeach A to the top of the Spalding and District Snooker League Division One table on Thursday night.

Ayres, who plays off an O7 handicap, made the sensational score in a frame success over Don Monk (R7) – who made a 38 break of his own – as his side beat club rivals Holbeach D 4-2.

New leaders Holbeach A are just a point clear of unbeaten Pyramid B, who were without a game.

Third-placed Bourne SC A were unable to apply any pressure on the top two after slipping up 4-2 at home to Boundary B.

Breaks of 24 and 21 from Oliver Player (O28) and Pete Hodgson-Kerry (O21) were in vain for the Bourne boys, with Brian Addy’s (scr) final frame success key for Boundary.

With Services E, in fourth, also losing 4-2 against friendly foes Services F, Donington C closed in on them with a 5-1 triumph at Holbeach C.

Talisman Neil Reynolds (O49) set the tone for them with a 24 break in the opening frame.

At the other end of the table, Donington A grabbed a welcome win as they edged out basement side Consti F 4-2. Tony Scully (O28) was their hero with a 24 break en-route to winning the final frame against Justin Stanley.

Also winners in the top tier were Services C, who beat Tulips A 4-2, and Pyramid A, who saw off Long Sutton A by the same score.

In Division Two, leaders Consti G suffered a hefty 5-1 defeat at Crowland A despite a 23 break from Wayne Forbes (O28).

That allowed Boundary A to move within two points of the pace-setters after they beat Pyramid C 4-2.

It went to the final frame, but Stewart Lilley (scr) got the job done for the Deepings side in the final frame.

Towards the other end of the table, Consti H picked up an important victory over Services B.

Doug Garfoot (O21) impressed with a 34 break for Consti, while Services’ Tim Nash (O28) and Jason Rose (O28) added breaks of 22 and 21 respectively for Services.

Also impressing was John Christian (R7), who pocketed a 22 break for Consti B in their 4-2 win at Boundary C.

Down in Division Two, Donington B have opened up a seven-point lead after seeing off Gosberton C 5-1.

A black-ball success from Gav Lewis (scr) gave them a boost in the opening frame.

Second-placed Long Sutton C, meanwhile, slipped up 5-1 at home to Gosberton B. Frame wins from Simon Slinger (R7), Stuart Ruskin (R7), Ady Holgarth (R14) and Nigel Goodwin (R21) got the job done for third-placed Donington.

Elsewhere, a 22 clearance from Steve Jennings (O21) was the highlight as Whittlesey A won 5-1 at Services D, while Pyramid E enjoyed a maximum 6-0 success over Consti E.
