Smokers given help to quit at council offices

Smokers in South Holland were given free advice on quitting the habit as part of a national initiative.

No Smoking Day took place last Wednesday and South Holland District Council played an active role in the campaign.

Its environmental health team linked up with Smoke Free Lincolnshire to set up an information stand in the reception area at its offices in Priory Road, Spalding.

Representatives from Smoke Free Lincolnshire were on hand throughout the day to offer advice and leaflets to members of the public and council staff.

Julie Cavill, tobacco control programme co-ordinator for Smoke Free Lincolnshire, said: “We had a great deal of interest from people passing by, so it proved a very useful day.

“The aim was to make people aware of the support available to them and we got a lot of positive feedback.”

Coun Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for environmental health, said: “This event coupled with National No Smoking Day raises awareness about the health risks associated with smoking and also lets smokers know that help is there if they need it.”

If you are a smoker and want to quit contact the Phoenix stop smoking service free on 0800 8401533.
