Smiles of fun as fair rolls back in

The biannual fair was back in Spalding this week and, as is customary, it was opened up for special educational needs and development pupils.

The late Roger Tuby Snr has been bringing the fair to the town for around 50 years.

He was a member of the Thorne branch of the Lions movement in Yorkshire and for around 25 years has invited the Spalding Lions to invite SEND pupils on the Thursday before it opens.

This year they came from the Tulip Academy and The Chapel Centre.

And Lions volunteers were on hand to help them around, including Fred and Margaret Collins for whom this was the 24th year of helping them out.

“You don’t get a better feeling than seeing some of the kids enjoying the rides.

“It’s fantastic seeing them get so much out of it and I’m told so many of them look forward to coming every year.

“We slow the rides down a bit and have the music less loud so they’re more comfortable.

“One child once wanted to go on the dodgems but only when no-one else was on.

“We were able to do that for him and he absolutely loved it.”
