Selfless Sarah is first entrant for competition

The first entrant to our Selfless Carers competition to be featured is Sarah King.

Sarah is the mum of 17-year-old twins, who both have autism.

She said: “Life is never with out challenges. I’m constantly pre-empting things to keep things running smoothly and calmly.

“One of the boys goes to Stamford College, the other to Boston, which is yet another struggle, some times going from one college to the other if they can’t get taxis.

“My mum is 91 this year and has osteoporosis which has caused three compound fractures to her spine which limits her walking.

“When I take her out I use a wheelchair. I take her shopping and do her housework on top of my own. I also cook her food, wash her hair and do daily jobs for her.

“Covid was a struggle, as both boys had to leave their schools abruptly.

“Bailey from the Priory and Flint from Donington Cowley school.

“With their autism they both have anxiety and struggle with the unknown and obviously COVID-19 was a unknown.

“I wiped the shopping down constantly and did click and collect early in the mornings so I could get food for us and my mum.

“The boys struggled as they like to walk around and look in book shops which weren’t open.

“Christmas 2020 we all caught COVID-19, including my mum, and my sister had to come from London to care for her as I was too poorly and had the boys to care for. Thankfully we all recovered okay, but it is A Christmas I will never forget.

“I am sure there are more deserving people than me, but my life is spent putting everyone before myself which I am happy to do and would have it no other way as I love my family.

“My partner is self employed and works six days a week.

“We have never had a weekend away together even before the children as money was always tight back then. When the children were small we had no one who would look after them.

“To win would be amazing and it would make 2022 a year to remember for the right reasons.”

To show appreciation for the exceptional work of our local carers who dedicate their time and energy to providing vital care and support to vulnerable people in our community, we’ve teamed up with Holiday With Us to bring you a fantastic opportunity.

Many carers put their life on hold to care for others and don’t often get the recognition or credit they deserve.

Carers – both paid and unpaid – play an essential role in our community and we believe their selfless work needs to be recognised, particularly after the challenges many of them have faced with the pandemic.

That’s why we’ve teamed up with Holiday With Us to launch Selfless Superstars, giving them the opportunity to win a well-deserved break.
