Spalding Hockey Club hosted their annual two-day intensive hockey summer camp last week (Aug 13&14).
Thirty-four youngsters aged 9 to 16 took part in the camp which has become a regular fixture in the club’s calendar.
With Matt Taylor away on international duty, the event (pictured) was led by Scottish international goalkeeper Jamie Cachia who plays for Nottingham-based Beeston in the English Hockey League Men’s Premier Division.
He was assisted by England Under-21 international Will Byas, Anna Toman from the England Development squad and Naomi Smith, a former Spalding youngster who now plays for Beeston Ladies.
Players were taken through a wide range of skills and also enjoyed small-sided games and a series of fun-based skills exercises.
Organiser Fred Morris said: “The camp proved to be extremely enjoyable and rewarding for all concerned and the coaches were full of praise for the group as a whole, considering it to be one of the best courses that they have coached all year, which is a great credit.”
Prizes of an Osaka hockey stick for the most improved player went to the host club’s Sharna Connelly (11). Another Spalding player, 12-year-old James Mayhew, was nominated as the outstanding player at the camp.
Next year’s camp dates are August 25 and 26.
> The club’s Wednesday morning Summer Fun sessions have been well attended.
One more will be held on Wednesday, August 26 (11am at Glen Park, Surfleet).
> The club’s popular Saturday morning coaching programme gets under way on Saturday, September 5 (9.15am-10.45am) and will run weekly until the Christmas break.
