Saturday football: Nine-man Tulips off to flying start, Vase woe for Tigers and Knights, Harrox win opener

Spalding United made a flying start to the new Pitching In NPL South East Division season by beating Sutton Coldfield Town 3-0 on Saturday, but both Holbeach United and Pinchbeck United suffered hefty defeats in the FA Vase.

Starting with the Tulips, goals from Joel Brownhill (8), Spencer Weir-Daley (24) and Jamie Goddard (44) gave them the perfect start in a stormy game at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field.

Indeed, Lewis Thorogood’s side finished with nine men after red cards to Ollie Price and Cameron Painter, while the visitors also had a player of their own dismissed.

Meanwhile, Holbeach were thumped 5-1 at home by UCL Premier Division rivals Loughborough University as they exited the FA Vase.

Tom Iaciofano (2), Tope Fadahunsi (2) and Cain Noble netted for the away side, with Josh Ford – who also sent a penalty against the bar when the score was 3-1 – getting the home reply.

Pinchbeck suffered a similar fate as they exited the Vase 4-1 at UCL Division One side Aylestone Park.

Kyle Onyon got their consolation, but the Knights have still yet to win an FA game in their history.

Elsewhere, Moulton Harrox began their ChormaSport PDFL Premier Division season with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Uppingham Town.

Their goals came from Louis Steadman and Billy King.

In the same division, Long Sutton Athletic thumped hosts Oakham United 9-0 and Holbeach United Reserves were 3-2 winners at ICA Sports.

But previously unbeaten Crowland Town slipped up 1-0 at Stilton United.

More to follow.
