Saturday football: Another 2-1 defeat for Tulips, Smith double fires Tigers up to third

Spalding United slipped to a fifth successive 2-1 defeat in Evo-Stik NPL First Division South on Saturday, while Holbeach United bounced back from their midweek derby defeat with a fine 3-0 victory in the ChromaSport UCL Premier Division.

Starting with the Tulips, a late strike from young talent Jonny Lockie wasn’t enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat at fellow mid-table outfit Belper Town.

Goals from Kieran O’Connell (37) and Alex Steadman (50) did the job for the hosts, sending Spalding down to 14th place in the table in the process.

Meanwhile, Holbeach are up to third in the UCL Premier Division after dispatching Daventry Town 3-0 at Carter’s Park.

Two first-half goals from Joe Smith and a late Lewis Leckie effort vanquished the memory of Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat at Boston Town and move the Tigers within five points of top spot with a game in hand.

In the ChromaSport PDFL, Moulton Harrox marched into the last eight of the PFA Senior Cup by thumping South Holland rivals Sutton Bridge United 6-1 at Broad Lane.

In the Premier Division, Holbeach United Reserves went down 2-1 at Warboys.
