Motorists face weeks of diversions as two major town centre roads in Spalding are due to be closed at the same time.
New traffic lights are being installed in Swan Street, in the centre of town, which will see the road closed for up to 10 weeks.
But work that’s closed Park Road since January and meant to be ending this week, is likely to take a ‘few weeks’ more, Anglian Water say.
One local councillor has called on the Swan Street closure not to happen before Park Road is open.
Coun Elizabeth Sneath said traffic issues in the town were highlighted last Friday afternoon. She said that was partly down to a train breaking down with reports on social media of railway barriers being down for long periods.
“It took me an hour to get from Spalding to Pinchbeck,” Coun Sneath said. “I am concerned about road closures but equally we want improvements to improve the traffic.
“I’ll be pushing for the work not to overlap. The improvements are a result of the survey work we previously did about traffic flow.
“It’s about better sequencing of the lights which are getting to the end of their life.”
A spokesman for Lincolnshire County Council said the authority was hopeful the work on Swan Street would be completed sooner than the ten-week timescale.
“The traffic lights are 25 years old and need upgrading.
“The new ones will be more carbon neutral and will reduce the waiting time for traffic. As soon as they can they’re going to open it back up to the public,” he said.
An Anglian Water spokesman said Park Road would remain closed for ‘a few more weeks’ while work is carried out on a collapsed sewer.
It needs re-lining to prevent future problems.
