Rising flood calls for fire and rescue

Spalding Fire Station has attended more flooding-related incidents in the last financial year, according to a recent report.

Members of the county’s Public Protection and Communities Scrutiny Committee will be told that the demand for flooding incidents continue to rise.
“The number of flooding related incidents fluctuate across the years and are obviously influenced by the weather conditions experienced each year, but there is evidence they are increasing,” the report says.
Storm Babet last October resulted in 157 flooding-related incidents in a three-day period over a widespread area of the county.
January this year saw Storm Henk when a further 66 flooding related incidents were called in to the service over a period of just 48 hours, the report says.
Within the top ten list of stations that have suffered the largest number of flooding incidents, seven of the county’s full-time stations appear.
While Spalding had more than 100 calls, Holbeach had less than ten.
There have been a number of ‘notable’ flooding events over the last five years, including August 2022 when the county was hit by a deluge after a long hot spell. Back in 2019 there were 161 incidents during a four-day spell in June and in November the same year there were 70, with 39 in just over 24 hours.
Incidents logged also include those offering advice-only as well as pumping out and making a scene safe.
