Prior sails away with the Welland Paddle

The annual battle for the Welland Paddle at Welland Yacht Club delivered a day of intense tactical racing, windy shifting conditions, and a high rate of attrition across a competitive eight-boat fleet.

Testing conditions on the water pushed helms and crews to their limits, rewarding consistency and composure under pressure.

By the end of the day, it was Andy Prior who mastered the race course, putting on a dominant display in his Laser to secure a flawless victory.

The opening race of the day saw the fleet contend with a shifting breeze, making tactical decisions on the beats absolutely critical.

Andy Prior found the clean air early, managing the course beautifully to claim first place on the water and on handicap.

Mark Scourfield, sporting a fine performance in his Solo, kept himself firmly in contention by taking a well-earned second place, just ahead of Adam Stabler who claimed third in his Laser.

The challenging conditions proved to be a harsh test for the rest of the fleet, resulting in a string of retirements.

Alistair Mitchell in the Laser Radial, Toby Schrauwers in the Feva, James Ramp in the Laser 4.7, and the GP14 duo of Ali and Rachel Brightey all failed to cross the finish line, leaving Jorrit Schrauwers to secure fourth as the final boat to complete the course.

As the fleet regrouped for the second race, the racing intensified at the front, though the tricky conditions continued to take their toll.

Prior once again showed his class, reading the wind perfectly to secure his second consecutive race victory with an elapsed time of 41 minutes and 30 seconds.

Behind him, Mitchell staged a brilliant comeback following his earlier retirement, piloting his Laser Radial to a superb second place on corrected time, agonizingly close to Scourfield who had to settle for third in the Solo.

Stabler maintained his consistent form to finish fourth, despite a couple of capsizes, while the remaining competitors again found themselves fighting a losing battle against the elements.

Jorrit Schrauwers, Toby Schrauwers, and Ramp were all forced into retirements, while the Brightey partnership did not compete.

With the scheduled third race ultimately cancelled, the overall standings were settled on the two completed races, leaving no room for a discard.

Prior’s perfect scoreline of two points comfortably earned him the prestigious Welland Paddle.
Scourfield’s consistency in the Solo secured him the second step on the overall podium with five points, while

Stabler rounded out the top three overall on seven points.

Despite a mixed day of retirements, Mitchell’s brilliant second-race performance was enough to lock down fourth place overall in what will be remembered as a true test of river sailing skill.
