Primary school’s established bonfire and fireworks event axed due to rising insurance costs

A school bonfire and fireworks event which has run for almost 30 years has been cancelled due to insurance costs.

Moulton Chapel Primary School had to pull the plug on the November 7 function.

Headteacher Lisa Meacher said the decision was taken with a heavy heart and only after a number of other options were explored.
“With regulations changing and becoming tighter, we realised that the drop zones [areas in which spent fireworks land] could not be met or would be very, very tight,” she said. “The health and safety aspect has become increasingly expensive and difficult.”

The event was held on land belonging to Moulton Eaugate farmer Lawrence Wakefield.
Miss Meacher said everyone connected was disappointed and the PTA has instead organised a free Halloween disco on the same night.
