Primary school retains ‘good’ status

A South Holland primary school has retained its ‘good’ status following an Ofsted report.

Fleet Wood Lane School has ‘happy and committed’ pupils who feel safe, according to the report published this week.

“The majority of parents and carers have a positive view of the school. One parent shared: ‘We like the school’s values, outdoor learning and extra-curricular opportunities,'” says the report.

“Leaders have designed a curriculum which encourages pupils to consider life beyond the school. Teachers use books and plan trips to extend pupils’ understanding of diversity. Pupils value opportunities to take on extra responsibilities, for example as part of the school’s engagement with the mini police project,” it adds.

The school has a new senior leadership team has high expectations of behaviour and pupils know the school’s new rules.

“They expect all pupils to behave in a way that is courteous and respectful to others,” the report notes.

There has been investment in new resources and staff training at the school, which has 188 pupils aged from four to 11.

“This work has ensured that the teaching of phonics across the school is consistent. Children in the reception year start learning sounds immediately,” the report notes.

The provision for children with special educational needs is ‘being refined.’

“Leaders know that targets for some pupils with SEND are not yet specific enough,” the inspector says.

The broader development of pupils is promoted within the school.

“Pupils enjoy a selection of sporting opportunities, including competitive sport.

“Older pupils act as play leaders and take pride in their roles. Pupils understand the importance of tolerance and respect,” the report adds.

A small number of pupils are persistently absent and leaders continue to work closely with families to try and resolve the issue.
