‘Please make an extra-special effort before East Midlands In Bloom judging’

A rallying call has been made to help Spalding do well in East Midlands In Bloom judging on Tuesday (July 14).

Last year the town received a Gold award and Spalding In Bloom committee member Coun Angela Newton is appealing to shop and business owners to make an extra-special effort so that the achievement can be emulated – or even surpassed – in 2015.

She said: “Please can you help us? Between now and Tuesday afternoon, if you own, work or run a business in the town, would you please remove weeds from outside your own premises and ensure that the footpath and road near you is also litter free.”

Hanging baskets and troughs sponsored by some of the town’s businesses – including The Voice – have added to planting and weeding efforts by members and friends of the Spalding In Bloom committee.
Coun Newton said: “Other groups have undertaken litter picks and we have been pleased to have been joined by some of the members of the Spalding Chamber.
“I would like to thank everyone for their support again this year, including South Holland District Council grounds maintenance and cleansing team and Lincolnshire County Council Highways team.
“Anything we can do together to encourage more people to shop in Spalding will be better for our local economy.”

Meanwhile, fellow Spalding district councillor Christine Lawton has thanked a mystery helper ahead of Tuesday’s judging at 1.45pm.
She said: “Coun Newton and I would like to thank the unknown Eastern European gentleman who kindly helped the two of us in our efforts at watering beds by the river on Monday evening.
“Armed with our own high tech watering system – a bucket on a rope – he drew quite a few gallons for us and cheered us both up.”
