Plans for Crowland service station recommended for refusal after nearby residents told to shut windows

Plans for a lorry park and service station on the A16 at Crowland have been recommended for refusal by South Holland District Council.

The application is for a service station, retail area, drive-thru coffee shop, toilets and shower facilities, landscaping and a parking area for 61 HGVs on land to the south of James Road North. But a lengthy report to be discussed by the council’s planning committee next week says the proposal should be refused – as noise mitigation suggestions of ‘closing windows’ were not enough.

The parish council supported the scheme in principle, but requested noise-reduction fences and changes to the layout to mitigate the potential effect on nearby residential development. But most of the council’s recommendations have not been implemented.

South Holland and the Deepings MP Sir John Hayes was among the objectors to the scheme and said he agreed with constituents who wanted it moved away from residential properties.

There were 100 objections from members of the public on the first submission of the plans; 42 to the second and 32 to the third.

The reasons for the recommendation for refusal include “The applicant’s submitted noise assessment concludes that guidelines for internal daytime and night time noise levels can only be met with windows closed in living rooms and bedrooms in nearby residential properties. This would unacceptably impact upon living conditions,” the report says.
